Console-only, so modded consoles
Skate 3 shipped in 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360 only, and EA Black Box closed in 2013. For years, modding it meant modding the console. On RGH/JTAG Xbox 360s that meant real-time editing: NDx’s Skate mod tool (2016) worked across all three skate games, Cult Crew published the offsets for anyone to build on, and later Skate3RTE went open source. On jailbroken PS3s it meant SPRX menus, like the one the EA SKATE MODDING Discord team built and Grim Doe packaged into a one-click installer. Much of that era lived in Discords and videos that no longer exist, so it’s the least documented part of this history.
The emulator years
RPCS3 opened the game to anyone with a PC and their own copy. GHFear’s 2019 walkthrough came out of “months of work” on EA’s texture and model formats. Shellywell123 built the next layer: a custom park swapper for players trading parks as save files, then Skate 3 Texture Tools, which credits “GHFear’s Youtube for the initial manual tutorial!” Others added a trainer (CH3AT), board graphics (S3GE), and GHFear’s RW4ArchiveTool for the game’s archives.
In June 2020 the EA Skate Modding Discord opened, and it became the scene’s home for years. It passed 86,000 members by 2026 (invite). wispp released the S3M mod menu there in 2021, then the Native Menu. The Native Menu is drawn by the game itself, and it became a widely used way to load mods on RPCS3. The Mad Man’s ragdoll mod went viral. In 2023, tuukkas, GHFear, wispp and others brought Skate 2’s San Vanelona into Skate 3, followed by its DLC maps. That was years of map work before the world format was fully writable. Meanwhile the Skate Modding Team started documenting the file formats.
Getting back online took the longest. Skateboard3Server got as far as authentication in 2020. In June 2025, wispp’s proxy got RPCS3 players online for the first time, and a Skate RPCS3 Online Discord grew past 10,000 members. In 2026 wispp followed it with a full Blaze server. It built on Aim4Kill’s BlazeSDK, gamingrobot’s TDF documentation and Tratos’s Blaze emulator, and BWKingsnake made a config tool so players could connect. skate6743’s Arcadia fork did the same for skate and skate 2.
The Discord and the world format
In September 2025 the map-making effort got its own server, the Dumbads & SunJays Skate3 Modding Discord (invite). The shared toolset is credited to “SunJay, Dumbad, Tuukkas, Wissp and S4M”. Dumbads’ ArenaBuilder and DlcBuilder made the world format writable, so custom maps could ship through the old DLC slots. SunJay’s GLB 2 ARENA turns any 3D model into a game-ready mesh. ChallengeEditor lets maps ship with their own Game of S.K.A.T.E. and races. The PS3 → recomp importer is, in its own words, “the work of several people in the Dumbads & SunJays Skate3 Modding Discord” (README), and randyadr’s GUI importer opened it to everyone. By early 2026 YouTubers were calling the scene better than ever.
Native, everywhere
In 2026, Alex McHugh released skate3recomp, a static recompilation of the Xbox 360 game into a native PC program, after portingpete’s first bring-up. Within weeks, people were asking for mod support. The recomp also became a base for other projects:
- Android builds by Buku313 and others
- a jailbroken PS4 port
- iOS and web builds
- chasmlol’s SK8 Engine and Rust engine, which brought a portable
.skatemap format and an in-game maps browser
skatemods.com exists to tie these together. A map uploaded once converts to every platform, and every tool above is credited to the people who built it.
