ReSkate 2.1.0

Read this first: big mod collections. Merging mods works much better in this release: changes from different mods are combined instead of one replacing another, items and songs mods add now reach every map, and broken mod files are repaired instead of crashing the game. That also means far more of every mod you have installed actually loads. With a very large collection (a few hundred mods, thousands of cosmetics) the game now has much more to load than before, and you may see:

  • long loading screens, and parts of a map still appearing after you spawn;
  • blurry or blotchy textures that take a long time to sharpen, or don't;
  • items missing from the customization menu, or pieces of the UI not showing;
  • on 8 GB graphics cards, heavy custom maps that stutter or load to a black screen.

If this happens, turn off the mods you don't use (Mod Manager, or a smaller mod profile) and try again: it is the quickest fix. We are still working on what the game does with very large collections. If it still goes wrong with a modest set of mods, send us logs\ReSkate.log from that run, along with your mod profile's share code.

2.0.8 and 2.0.9 were pulled after too many players crashed on them, so this release follows 2.0.7: everything from those two, plus the fixes for what went wrong in them.

New

A new ReSkate menu

  • Two styles: a window for the mouse, as before, and a new full screen menu made for a controller. Switch with the button in the top bar, F11, or View on a controller. Each style keeps its own menu size.
  • Full screen: pages across the top (LB / RB), each page's sections as tabs (LT / RT), button prompts at the bottom, the pause menu's sounds, and the pause menu's own server browser and session pages as the ONLINE page. Everything works on a pad: switches, option rows, sliders that repeat when held, the right stick to scroll.
  • The pages are regrouped: HOME (quick switches such as time of day, noclip and No Bail, and a tile for every page), MAP, BUILD, SKATER (freecam, first person, cheats), SANDBOX (the Trainer, renamed), ADDONS, ONLINE, PROGRESS, MODS and SETTINGS.
  • ADDONS gathers what ReSkate adds to skate.: the drone, Board Break, Road Rash, Hall of Meat, grind exits and music.
  • Map picker: every map with its picture, including custom maps (their mod's icon), and a search box in the window.
  • Pause menu maps: the ReSkate page of the pause menu now shows the maps as one MAPS grid of pictures, the game's maps first and then the custom ones. Maps you can't load right now are dimmed.
  • Window menu: the side rail lists every addon (Drone, Board Break, Road Rash, Hall of Meat, Grind Exits, Music) under EXTRAS, a click away.
  • Sliders have a box beside them to type an exact value.
  • Binds are grouped (general, camera, cheats and boosts, online), and there is a new bind and console command to open the menu (menu).

Music through the game's own player

  • Spotify, YouTube Music and External Audio play through the in-game music player, each with its own row in the music screen: track name, cover, pause, next.
  • Plex: link your Plex account on the music setup page to see what's playing, with album art and playback controls.
  • Local Files: add a folder of your own music (MP3, M4A, AAC, Ogg, FLAC, WAV).
  • Online Radio: find stations by name or add a stream's address.
  • A five-band equaliser and loudness levelling, plus a queue and a Music page in the ReSkate menu.

FPV drone

  • Fly a drone from the free camera, with real quad physics, collisions and a goggle-style display.
  • Flies with a gamepad by default (Xbox or PlayStation), or keyboard and mouse, or a USB RC radio. The throttle stick springs back to a hover, with an optional height hold and a self-levelling angle mode alongside acro.
  • A truer flight model: thrust, drag and prop wash, motors that spool up and down, and crashes that bounce and tumble the drone and cut the motors on a hard hit.
  • Follow me: the drone flies itself behind you and films your line: it hangs off to the side for a halfpipe or bowl session, keeps off walls and the ground, with distance and aggression settings.
  • Other players' drones are shown as a 3D model and heard where they fly, and your own motor plays through the game's sound.
  • Presets for a Tinywhoop, a toothpick and a 5-inch, and every setting on the DRONE page (dronemenu opens it).
  • Turning the goggle display off now hides all of its readouts (the signal warnings still show).

Board Break

  • Boards wear from hard landings, rail hits, grinding and slams. A worn board steers lazier and breaks more easily.
  • A board only breaks because of something you did, never at random. Light slams and bails no longer snap it, and a board no longer gives way while you're just riding. The harder the slam, the more likely the break: a new board never breaks from a small one.
  • You're told when your board is getting beat and when it's done. A done board gives way on the next hard landing.
  • Coming down too hard on a rail can snap the board.
  • Crack and impact sounds, with their own settings, now play through the game's sound at the skater, so they echo and fade with distance like the game's own.

Grind exits

  • Pick the side you exit a grind with LT / RT.
  • A pop-out strength slider.
  • A trigger pressed up to a second before the grind still counts.
  • Works with DualShock 4 and DualSense pads.

Mod items say where they're from

  • In the customization menu, an item from a mod shows that mod inside the game's item card: its icon, name, author and version, and whether it adds the item or changes one of the game's.

Replay editor

  • Keyframe smoothing for the free camera: shots flow through each keyframe instead of speeding up and settling around it, and every keyframe is still hit exactly. Off by default. Turn it on and set how smooth in Mod Options > Visuals, the pause menu, or SKATER > Freecam in the ReSkate menu (console: keysmooth).

Trainer

  • Hardcore preset, beside Realistic, for players used to skating games with less help (Session, Skater XL): grinds lock on only from close and lined up, grinds and powerslides lose speed, flips and spins are slower, and bails come sooner.
  • A preset of your own with the same name as a built-in one (Hardcore, for example) is renamed to "<name> (yours)" instead of hiding the built-in one.

Park editor

  • Object sets: select some objects, save them as a set from the library's SETS tab, and place the whole set again anywhere, on any map.
  • Duplicate (button or Ctrl+D) copies the selected objects, and local axes work when several objects are selected.
  • Pasting, undoing and loading a park now keep each object's scale, and every pasted object can be selected, moved and deleted, not just the last one.

Official mods

  • The Board Break deck pack, Road Rash and the FPV drone model are official mods, listed on the launcher's Official tab. Pick the ones you want and press Install; when a new version comes out the tab shows Update. The in-game Mods page lists them as official. A copy you installed yourself is moved in.
  • Each installed one can be turned off with its On / Off switch. Board Break and Road Rash only show up in the game when their mod is installed and on. Changes apply the next time you press Play.

Launcher

  • Redesigned mod manager: Profiles, Get Mods, My Mods and Official pages with a banner and cards.
  • The window can be resized, down to the size it opens at.
  • Mod profiles: save which mods are on and in what order, switch between setups, and share them by code or file (r2modman-compatible).
  • Thunderstore dependencies: installing a mod now brings the mods it needs, so mod packs work.
  • Test pre-releases: a setting to try upcoming builds before they're released, shown when there is one. Changing it, or the update setting, takes effect straight away.
  • Updating a mod deletes the old copy instead of filling the Recycle Bin.

Multiplayer

  • Other players' placed objects:
    • They're ghosts you skate through by default. Each player's row in the session menu has a switch to make theirs solid, and a server's own park objects stay solid.
    • The object card names who placed it, and on someone else's object it offers Disable rather than Edit.
  • Typing dots show above a skater while they write a message.
  • Kicks and bans show a popup explaining why, instead of just a status line.
  • Custom map downloads are more reliable: a download that has started finishes and installs even if the server stops waiting, and you're told to join again.
  • Throwdowns: a line score with thousands separators is no longer cut short (5,432 was read as 5).
  • Joining servers: a server whose list of world layers came from another game build no longer turns every player away ("Join code, sender identity, or multiplayer protocol did not match").
  • Safer sessions: a modified client can no longer stretch a skater past the bone-scale limit by resizing a chain of bones, or fill another player's memory with pose and sound streams.

Fixes

  • Freezes
    • The game no longer hangs for about a second every two minutes while skating.
    • Many smaller hitches are gone: saving settings and progress, reading the Mods folder, music covers, input and other ReSkate work no longer hold up the game's own threads.
  • Crashes
    • Fixed a long-standing crash in the renderer's resource pool, one of the most reported, which could happen anywhere.
    • Big custom maps (such as Cardiff) no longer crash while loading.
    • Big custom maps on 8 GB graphics cards no longer run out of room for meshes and end in a DirectX error, or load to a black screen (The Mashup). See "Video memory on custom maps" below.
    • Changing the time of day no longer loads two at once, which crashed levels with many lights.
    • Dense custom maps (Los Santos City, San Andreas) no longer crash or hang the GPU.
    • Levels with a very large number of lights no longer crash.
    • The Master Chief and TASM2 Spider-Man costumes (and any mod with the same problem) no longer crash the game while loading. The broken entries are fixed when your mods are merged, and the merge notes name the mod.
    • Fixed a group of crashes in the game's shader system that came from some cosmetic and map mods.
    • A mod item with a broken colour preset no longer crashes the customization menu: the item shows without it, and the log names it.
    • No more crash on changing maps with a Spotify or YouTube station playing, and no more slow memory growth while one plays. The game's songs also keep their own names, which no longer pile up in the music screen.
    • No more crash when the music player picks the next song from a large playlist.
  • Cosmetics
    • With a large mod collection, the customization menu no longer comes up empty and the player card no longer disappears.
    • Your profile no longer keeps a record of every cosmetic of every mod you've ever installed.
  • Video memory on custom maps
    • Each custom map now gets the room for meshes its own meshes need, worked out when your mods are merged, instead of half your graphics card's free memory whatever the map. Most maps need far less, which leaves more for textures; big maps still get up to half of what's free. The game's own maps are unchanged.
    • That room is measured after the previous map has unloaded, so loading one custom map after another no longer leaves each one less than the last.
    • When a map's meshes need more than your card has room for, simpler versions of distant objects are used from nearer, instead of running out.
    • Maps built with an older ReSkate Studio kept some of their textures fully loaded at all times. Those textures now load their sharpest detail only when needed, as the game's own do (about 180 MB less on PQS Cordoba). Rebuilding a map with a current Studio fixes the rest.
  • Replay export: a long export no longer drops you to the splash screen, and videos are encoded at much higher quality.
  • Music screen: it no longer comes up empty when your playlists hold more than 1,024 songs.
  • PlayStation controllers no longer briefly drop input.
  • Mods
    • A mod with one unreadable script no longer loses the rest of its changes.
    • Mods that change the same game files no longer lose some of their lists and text when they're combined.
    • A mod folder or deck with non-English characters in its name no longer breaks the Mods folder or the Board Break decks.
    • A mod that links outside its own folder is refused instead of installed.
    • Merging many map mods writes shared content once, so the merge is smaller and faster.
  • Console: help perf (and help log, help music and the like) lists every command under that name, and a mistyped word after a command says where to look. mp map-markers, mp puppet-savings, throwdown-hud and throwdown-offboard no longer crash when typed on their own, and perf textures is now textures.

Launcher and install

  • ReSkate now needs a folder of its own, not Steam's skate. folder, so a Steam update can't break it. If you run it from Steam's folder, the launcher tells you to move it.
  • Non-English folder names: the game can't start from a folder whose path has non-English characters in it (OneDrive folders often do). The launcher now warns you before starting, so move ReSkate to a folder such as C:\Games\ReSkate.
  • macOS: the launcher now finds Steam when the game runs through NotProton or CrossOver, and MACOS-SETUP.md walks through the setup.
  • Mismatched game files: when the game's data is from another build, the launcher asks you to verify, and your mods are checked again afterwards.
  • Failed game downloads: when the launcher can't download the game from Steam, the log now says why (the account doesn't own it, Steam refused the sign-in, the disk is full), and old temporary files are cleaned up before a download.
  • Crash reports now go to ReSkate's own server with the log and the mods you ran, and there's an optional setting to send performance timings (off by default).

Troubleshooting

  • Stutter reports: perf sample 10 present records the slowest frames and what the game was doing in them; send the files it writes next to ReSkate.log.
  • The log now names any graphics resource that takes 20 ms or more to create, and records video memory use (and how much has spilled into system memory) while you play.
  • dronemodeltest remote flies a pretend other player's drone, and the log says why a drone model is missing.

Dedicated servers

  • Timed kicks: kick <player> [minutes|restart] and a default kick time. Vote kicks last 5 minutes by default.
  • Tool locks: take noclip (and teleporting), No Bail, the boosts or physics tuning away from one player while everyone else keeps them: lock <player|SteamID64> <tools|all>, unlock and locks, from the console or by an admin in chat. A lock stays when the player leaves and joins again, until it's lifted or the server restarts, and you can lock a player who isn't on.
  • Fair throwdowns: players.throwdown_locks locks tools for a throwdown's players while it runs (console: throwdown-locks). Changing it mid-throwdown only changes the tools that differ.
  • Object scaling off: a loaded park keeps its objects' saved scale (they show at normal size) instead of losing it, and editing no longer stalls on resizes the server won't allow.
