The story

In 2012, Virgil Abloh bought up deadstock Ralph Lauren Rugby flannels, screen-printed PYREX and the number 23 on the back, and sold them for around $550. People were outraged. Here's what he said about it to GQ in 2015:

"It's just reappropriation. That's what the whole thing was: Grab [Ralph Lauren] Rugby shirts, buy them all, then print on them, and then everyone tries to find the stuff. Or they see the Rugby shirts on sale, and they're like, 'Wait, that was a thirty dollar flannel, now it's $500?' And it's like, Well, you didn't think of it first."

And to The Fader in 2014:

"People were like, 'How are gonna charge $500 for a rugby marked up from $40?' and I'm like 'You can't get that rugby anymore. The one that's $40 in the store, I bought it, now you can't get it!' That's intellectual to me. That's an art project."

What the name means. Pyrex is the glass cookware you'd find in a kitchen, used for cooking more than food. 23 is Michael Jordan's number, a nod to Chicago, where Virgil grew up. One shirt made a whole statement about the street, the hustle and where he came from.

What Virgil Abloh means to me

Virgil Abloh is, single-handedly, the best designer and creative director we ever had the chance to witness. Without this one idea, a cheap flannel with Pyrex 23 on the back, we wouldn't have gotten Off-White. We probably wouldn't have gotten the Yeezy era the way it happened, or the A$AP Rocky era of fashion either. This flannel was the starting point. It showed people that fashion and streetwear aren't what they seem: it's about the idea, the reference and the story behind it.

I wanted this flannel in the game, and nobody else had made it. People should know who Virgil Abloh is, because he's the reason I design clothes in skate. right now. I paid attention to what Virgil did in real life.

How it was made

• Built on the game's real loose button-up, so the buttons, collar and pocket move like the real shirt.
• Every flannel is an original plaid drawn in code, with a woven twill and real warp and weft stripes.
• The PYREX 23 back print was redrawn as a varsity-style logo and placed just under the shoulder yoke, like the original.
• Built and tested in ReSkate Studio.
